Here's How Cheryl Hiebert and Reiki Brought Me To a Different Level of Understanding of Myself

Attending First Degree Reiki wasn’t my first experience absorbing the incredible knowledge and insight that Cheryl has to offer, but it was definitely the most valuable one yet for my own well-being. And of course, I looked forward to settling into that amazing “zen drunk” feeling for another weekend - and I wasn’t disappointed. Trust me, with that mood, you feel like you can take on the world, your worries melt away, and you are left with the warmth of total bliss and happiness.

Adding the learning and practice of Reiki and its attunements (that are an experience in itself) completed the weekend and left me with a different level of understanding about myself as a person, a mother, and how I perceive myself in relation to the world’s energy.

Reiki, translated from Japanese means “spiritually guided life force energy.” The International Centre for Reiki Training defines reiki as “a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by ‘laying on hands’ and is based on the idea that an unseen ‘life force energy’ flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's ‘life force energy’ is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.”

Whether you choose to believe in the power of energy, regardless of the scientific proof of its existence (think 6th-grade science and learning about atoms being made up of 99.9% space and energy. The entire universe is energy. We are energy, not matter), just having that feeling of allowing part of your body absorb warmth for long enough lengths of time for healing and calmness to settle over you is worth the treatment. Some parts of our bodies are usually only reserved to be touched during hurried showers and even more hurried sex. Reiki is not a sexual act as much as a massage from a registered therapist isn’t either.

If our bodies are made up of almost complete energy, why does medicine continue to invest in medical procedures that seek to cover up an illness at the surface instead of healing it from our core energy sources?

The practice of Reiki in Ontario has continued to grow as both regular Canadians as well as medical practitioners become aware of the legitimacy of Reiki and its ability to complement the preparation for and recovery after surgery, ease pain caused from muscle tension, as well as decrease blood pressure and, of course, stress.

Up to 10% of Canadians have tried Reiki and almost all have responded with positive results. More Canadians are urging Reiki and other holistic healing methods to become part of standard healthcare practice. The International Association of Reiki Professionals (IARP) states,

“Reiki is an alternative treatment with no side effects and no risks or possible complications, making it a safe option for almost any patient. Many people report positive experiences with reiki, and studies have shown that this alternative therapy can lead to improvements for hospitalized patients. Although reiki is not yet practiced or offered in every Canadian hospital, it stands to reason that this treatment will continue to become more readily available to and popular among patients in Canada.

I doubt you could find a study that describes and proves reiki to be a negative addition to healing and treatment methods. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

If you’re returning after actually opening another tab in the hopes of finding some kind of information to prove me wrong, or you believed my trustworthy writing skills and continued to read, you must now be at that point where you can at least see that there will soon be a demand for more reiki practitioners across Canada. There is the benefit of learning to practice reiki for self-healing as well as treating those closest to you, however, there’s also a chance to become a part of a growing network of healers committed to helping others become attuned to their own happiness and power.

So why Cheryl Hiebert and how has my life changed since becoming a learner on the path to “spiritual evolution and development”?

Over my weekend of attending First Degree Reiki, a course I took alongside other spiritual believers,

some stronger in belief than others (yet we all left with the same feeling of spiritual empowerment), we were shown Cheryl’s 5 reiki precepts in which we can say to ourselves every morning or during times of added stress and other emotions (when our energy becomes a little out of whack). I won’t give them to you, because I highly suggest you take the course with Cheryl, but I will tell you that they are based on bringing yourself and your mind into the present “just for today.”

My life has been a horrible cliche of a whirlwind these past so many months. I have been a beacon calling in other people’s stress in order to help them unload and find happiness. Instead of helping, however, I have been absorbing the stress of those around me and taking it on double-fold.

People have relied on me because I am a visible lighthouse of relief and perhaps an easy path to take on the road to their own happiness. Whatever it may be, I have forgotten a little about the happy, spiritual, and positive person I used to be before.

Since being attuned with Cheryl, I have used her attunements and meditated them in my mind during moments when I can feel the vicious anger absorbed by others trying to escape through my mouth and fingertips in the form of words.

It hasn’t been perfect, but I have begun to take steps in both my career and at home life, as well as through my self-reiki, to begin healing myself first and find other ways to help heal those around me. Instead of absorbing the bad energy into myself, says Cheryl, we must always cleanse our hands and our minds and “shake” that negativity that we absorb away from our bodies.
